RABBINICAL SEMINARIES

Academies for the training of *rabbis. Since the time of the *Enlightenment, traditional *yeshivah training has been regarded as less than adequate as a preparation for the modern rabbinate.

In 1829, the first rabbinical seminary was founded in Padua. This was followed by the École Centrale Rabbinique in 1830, the Juedisch-Theologisches Seminar of Breslau in 1854, Jews’ College of London in 1855, the Berlin Jeudische Hochschule in 1872 and the Orthodox Hildesheimer’s Seminar in 1873. In the United States the *Jewish Theological Seminary (*Conservative) was founded in 1886, the Hebrew Union College (*Reform) in 1875, the Elchanan Theological Seminary (*Orthodox) in 1897 and the *Reconstructionist College in 1968.
