PURIM

(Hebrew. ‘Lots’) The *Feast of *Esther. Purim commemorates the deliverance of the *Jews by Esther and Mordecai from Haman’s plot to destroy them. It is celebrated on Adar 15 and the Book of Esther is read in the synagogue. It is customary to dress up and there is a general carnival atmosphere. (See also *SCROLLS).
