RG, any of various syntactic processes by which some NP is moved from a lower- to a higher-ranking position within the Relational Hierarchy, such as from direct object to subject during passivization. The term is also used informally for the same purpose in frameworks in which such operations receive no formal recognition. Cf. demotion.
