PRAYER

Public or private communication with *God. In the *Jerusalem *Temple a pattern of prayer was laid down by the men of the *Great Assembly which followed the pattern of the Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Additional *sacrifices.

After the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, the same pattern—*Shaharit, *Minhah, *Maariv and *Musaf—was maintained. From the *geonic period daily *prayerbooks (*siddurim) and *festival prayerbooks (*mahzorim) were compiled. (See also *AMIDAH, *LITURGY, *NIGHT PRAYERS, *PIYYUT, *SHEMA, *TEFILLIN).
