Dictionary of Biological Psychology

posture

The position of a multi-segmented body part or the torso. In MOTOR CONTROL, posture refers to the maintenance of upright stance despite inertial and gravitational forces, fluctuations in muscle tone and so forth.

Research questions focus on how descending neural pathways modulate the SPINAL CORD circuitry which control the muscles of the trunk and legs. In general these circuits function by providing excitatory inputs to neurons in the spinal cord which activate leg/torso extensor muscles. In addition these descending circuits are able to modify spinal cord reflexes as, for example, when visual information is used to mimic the effects of body sway.
