Dictionary of Biological Psychology

point mutation

The substitution of one of the NUCLEOTIDES within a DNA sequence.

Point mutations in the region of DNA encoding specific PROTEINS may cause an altered protein structure, and a consequent change in its function. Point mutations may occur during damage of DNA by environmental factors such as ultraviolet light, or during the process of DNA replication, where bases may be incorrectly inserted into a growing strand of DNA. It is believed that point mutations may be responsible for many evolutionary changes in species.
