Plaid Cymru, or the Party of Wales, is a socialist party which campaigns for the full national status of Wales within the United Kingdom and the European Union. It aims to create an independent Wales, and promote equality between individuals, cultures and languages in that nation.
Established in 1925, Plaid Cymru won its first seat in the House of Commons in 1966. At present the party has four elected representatives in the House of Commons and 17 in the Welsh Assembly.
