A poem which is used as a *prayer either privately or during the course of the *liturgy. The earliest examples of piyyutim go back to the 6th Century and they continued to be produced until the time of the *Enlightenment.
Examples include the ‘kerovah’ which were written to be included in the *Amidah and the ‘yozer’ which were said with the *Shema. Piyyutim were also composed to be sung at *Sabbath meals and to accompany private prayer. Over the centuries many anthologies of piyyutim have been produced.
