Dictionary of Environmental Health
A measure of the ability of a substance to remain unchanged in the environment. The term is usually applied to those substances that are or are potentially toxic.
Persistence is a significant consideration when assessing the HAZARD PROFILE of a substance. Long-term persistence of a mildly toxic substance can lead to potentially more cumulative damage than a more toxic but less persistent substance. The long-term persistence is especially important when considering those chemicals that have profound effects on the environment, such as GREENHOUSE GASES.
