The peripheral nervous system contains the CRANIAL NERVES and SPINAL NERVES; peripheral nerves (see PERIPHERAL NERVES AND SPINAL NERVES) and two major divisions: the AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (also known as the INVOLUNTARY NERVOUS SYSTEM), which further divides into the SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM and PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEMS; and the SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (alternatively known as the VOLUNTARY NERVOUS SYSTEM).
