Dictionary of Biological Psychology

paranoia

A clinical construct referring to a psychological state characterized by excessive self-reference.

In day-to-day use the term is increasingly restricted in meaning to the harbouring of persecutory ideas or DELUSION, but technically may include any abnormality of belief such as grandiose delusions, delusions of guilt or religious delusions. Abnormal persecutory content of thought is encountered in a variety of clinical conditions, including paranoid SCHIZOPHRENIA, PSYCHOTIC MOOD DISORDERS, certain PERSONALITY DISORDERS and any organic state such as DELIRIUM TREMENS.
