A parable is a short story to make a moral point and is often associated with the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament.
Well-known parables include the Good Samaritan, the Parable of the Talents and the Prodigal Son. A knowledge of parables is helpful in reading those books where some familiarity with them is assumed.
The term can also be used to describe some modern texts for adults and children. Perhaps Anthony Browne’s The Tunnel can be read as a parable about sibling relationships.
