Panhellenic Socialist Movement
The Panhellenic Socialist Movement, or Panellino Socialistiko Kinima (PASOK), is one of the two main political parties in Greece. PASOK was founded in 1974, following the military dictatorship of 1967–74, to promote national independence, popular domination, social emancipation and democratic procedures. Today it describes itself as an open socialist, patriotic and democratic movement which campaigns for the universal values of freedom, democracy, peace and solidarity.
In the first free elections after the end of the dictatorship, held in November 1974, PASOK won 13.5% of the vote and 15 parliamentary seats, thereby becoming the third largest party after New Democracy (ND) and the liberals. It became the official opposition in the 1977 elections and won 48% of the vote and 173 parliamentary seats in 1981, when it formed the first socialist government in Greece. PASOK governed in 1981–90, and again in 1993–2004. In the national elections to the Vouli ton Ellinon, held on 7 March 2004, the party obtained 40.55% of the vote and 117 seats in the 300-seat parliament. It became the main opposition party to the ND government.
