(Hebrew. ‘Sheaf’) An offering brought to the *Temple in *Jerusalem on Nisan 16. An omer was defined as one tenth of an ephah of barley.
On Nisan 16 (the Second day of *Passover), it was burnt on the *altar by the *priests to ensure a safe harvest. Subsequently forty-nine days were counted which were traditionally observed as days of semi-mourning. After the forty-nine days had passed, the *festival of *Shavuot was celebrated.
