Dictionary of Biological Psychology

occipital lobe

The cerebral CORTEX is divided into four LOBES.

The occipital lobe is located at the posterior end of the cortex and is separated from the PARIETAL LOBE by the parietal-occipital sulcus. The very posterior pole of the lobe contains the PRIMARY VISUAL CORTEX and damage to this region leaves primates (including humans) phenomenally blind though residual visual function can be demonstrated (termed BLINDSIGHT). The rest of the lobe also contains areas that process visual information (though visual areas are not confined to this lobe).
