NUMBERS, BOOK OF

Fourth book of the *Pentateuch. The Book of Numbers includes a census of the twelve tribes and describes the Israelites’ travels through the wilderness from the revelation of *Sinai until the stay at Shittim.

It also includes the laws of the *Nazarite, the *Levites and the red *heifer. Traditionally believed to have been written by *Moses, most scholars place it considerably later. (See also *DOCUMENTARY HYPOTHESIS).
