Dictionary of Biological Psychology
(i) Cellular: A large dense structure within a EUKARYOTE cell, in which the DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID (DNA) is separated from the CYTOPLASM. The nucleus is enveloped by two semipermeable membranes (see MEMBRANE).
The nucleus is the site at which DNA is translated into RIBONUCLEIC ACID (RNA). The RNA then enters the cytoplasm, where PROTEINS are made. See also, GENE.
(ii) Anatomical: A cluster of neuronal cell bodies within the brain. Cells within a nucleus may be defined on the basis of a common feature, such as histochemical staining, or biochemical marker, or by a common function.
(iii) Atomic: The nucleus of an ATOM contains a proton and a neutron; see ATOM.
