A Political and Economic Dictionary of Western Europe, First Edition
The New Democracy, or Nea Demokratia (ND), is one of the two main political parties in Greece. Founded in 1974 following the military dictatorship (1967–74), ND is a progressive conservative party which campaigns to promote the Greek nation. It is an advocate of the free market but also favours state intervention in the economy to promote social justice. It seeks to preserve the independence and sovereignty of democratic Greece, but is also an advocate of promoting Greece’s position in Europe. In the first free elections following the dictatorship, held in November 1974, ND won a landslide victory, obtaining 54.37% of the vote. It was re-elected in 1977 and governed until 1981. ND returned to power as the strongest member of a coalition government in 1989, and one year later it secured a majority government in new elections. This government lasted until 1993. In the national elections to the Vouli ton Ellinon, held on 7 March 2004, the party won 45.37% of the vote and 165 seats in the 300-seat parliament. It subsequently formed a government, with Konstantinos Karamanlis as Prime Minister.
