NAHMAN OF BRATLAV

(1772–1811) *Hasidic leader. Nahman was a direct descendant of *Israel b.

Eliezer and spent much of his life engaged in controversy with other Hasidic leaders. He introduced several innovations including the particular elevation and veneration of the one true *zaddik (namely himself). His biographer and disciple Nathan Stemhartz organised his followers after his death and groups of hasidim still follow Nahum’s teachings today.
