The Routledge Dictionary of Gods and Goddesses , Devil and Demons
An ancient Egyptian goddess. The consonantal writing of her name is Mw.t; the etymology of this is not clear. It has been linked with the word for ‘mother’, but it could also mean ‘vulture’, in which form the goddess was originally revered.
Later, she is anthropomorphized and retains only the vulture’s crest. In Thebes, she was regarded as the spouse of → Amun and mother of → Chons. Mut was equated both with the sky-goddess → Hathor and with the snake-goddess → Uto.
