An educational movement particularly in 19th century Lithuania. Among the *Mitnaggedim, threatened by the Enlightenment (see *HASKALAH), *musar was studied extensively in the *yeshivot. Students intoned ethical works in unison and were expected to participate in disciplinary activities to subdue their natural instincts.
