Murukān

Ancient Dravidian deity, whose name means ‘the youthful one’. He is also known as Cēyōn (‘the red one’).

He is the divine hunter and warrior, and therefore identified with the Hindu → Skanda. He rides on an elephant or a peacock. His banner is adorned with a cock, and as attribute he carries a spear along with a garland of red flowers of the Katampu tree. Murukān’s own epithet was katampan=god of the katampu tree.
