MOURNING

Lamentation for the dead or for a calamity. The Bible describes wearing sackcloth, the rending of garments, sitting on the ground, putting dust on the head, *fasting and abstaining from washing as mourning customs.

In modern times, the bereaved stay at home for seven days (sit *shiva) after the *funeral and receive visitors sitting on a low stool. Parents and children should be mourned for thirty days, and, in a modified manner, for a year. A *yahrzeit lamp is lit and *kaddish recited on the anniversary of the death.
