Dictionary of Biological Psychology

motor neurons

(Also known as motoneurons) The type of NEURON that has the CELL BODY in the VENTRAL HORN of the SPINAL CORD that sends an AXON out via the VENTRAL HORN to make contact with a MUSCLE FIBRE at a NEUROMUSCULAR JUNCTION.

These are the neurons that finally transmit neural messages from the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM to the MUSCLES. Motor neurons come in a variety of sizes: large ones have wide diameter axons that transmit fast action potentials and innervate fast muscles. Smaller motor neurons have thinner axons, transmit more slowly and innervate slower muscles.
