A rectangular slot cut into a piece of timber with the aim of receiving a TENON or projection from an interlocking piece. A ‘mortise and tenon’ joint in woodworking is one in which the tenon of one piece fits closely at a right angle into the mortise of another piece. The US spelling is ‘mortice’.
