Many of the generally descriptive Greek and Latin terms in NEUROANATOMY, though still useful in describing the developing nervous system, have been moved aside over the years: RHOMBENCEPHALON has given way to HINDBRAIN, MESENCEPHALON to MIDBRAIN and PROSENCEPHALON to FOREBRAIN. The term mesencephalic, meaning ‘of the mesencephalon’, or ‘of the mid-brain’, has survived rather better than the term mesencephalon itself.
