MERKAVAH MYSTICISM

(Hebrew. ‘Chariot’ mysticism) Speculations based on *Ezekiel’s vision of the chariot of *God. Traces of Merkavah mysticism can be found in the *Dead Sea Scrolls, in rabbinic *midrash and in the *Talmud. The speculations were also taken up by Christian *gnostics and the merkavah traditions were preserved and incorporated into *kabbalistic thought. (See also *KABBALAH).
