The last of the *Biblical *minor prophets. The Book of Malachi contains reproaches against the people and a warning of the coming *Day of the Lord. It also predicts that *Elijah will return before the judgment (see also *MESSIAH).
The book is of unknown authorship, but was probably composed in the mid 6th century BCE. After Malachi, it was believed that *prophecy had departed from *Israel. (See *PROPHETS).
