MAIMONIDEAN CONTROVERSY

A philosophical controversy. The Maimonidean controversy was initiated by *Maimonides himself against the authority of the *geonim.

In turn his Mishneh Torah was fiercely condemned by many contemporary scholars and a *herem was pronounced against it. *Nahmanides attempted to defend Maimonides and the controversy was temporarily halted when his books were burnt by Christian friars. However the tension between the rationalists and the anti-rationalists continued at various times throughout the Middle Ages. (See *MAIMONIDES).
