mahābhūtas

‘great elements’, the four substances or elemental forces which constitute the material world: (earth, solidity), āpas (water, fluidity), vāyu (air, vibration) and agni (fire, warmth, light), with ākāśa (ether, space) added as a fifth one in some systems.

In monistic teachings such as Advaita Vedānta they are the last or grossest emanations of the one divine source; in other systems such as they are the products of the forces of nature .
