LURIA, ISAAC BEN SOLOMON

(Ari) (1543–1572) *Kabbalist. Luria settled in *Safed, gathered a group of disciples round him and taught them the mysteries of the Kabbalah.

He is thought to have received a revelation from the *prophet *Elijah and his teachings were preserved in different forms by his followers. Luria himself wrote a commentary on a section of the *kabbalah and several hymns. His ideas were highly influential on the *Hasidic movement.
