Dictionary of Environmental Health
An acronym for liquefied petroleum gas. It is so named because it is stored in liquid form under pressure and can consequently be supplied in pressurised cylinders and tanks.
It is a popular fuel source in areas where access to mains supply is unavailable. The term refers generally to either butane or propane, the latter having a higher calorific value. LPG is sometimes known as bottled gas.
