A Popular Dictionary of Judaism
Pattern of religious services. The liturgy grew out of the practices in Palestine and Babylon in the time of the *geonim. The Italian and *Ashkenazi rite is based on the Palestinian tradition while the *Sephardi rite draws on the Babylonian.
Ultimately both are based on the pattern of worship and *sacrifice in the *Temple in *Jerusalem. The liturgies adopted by the *Progressive movements are considerably shorter; several prayers which are now felt to be offensive (eg. ‘Blessed art thou O Lord God, King of the universe, who has not made me a *woman’) have been removed and much of the service is recited in the vernacular.
