The third book of the *Pentateuch. Leviticus contains the laws concerning *sacrifice, the *sanctuary, impurity and holiness.
Called the *Torat Kohenim (‘Priests’ Manual’) and believed by the *sages to have been written by *Moses, it is now generally recognised as coming from the *priestly source (see *DOCUMENTARY HYPOTHESIS). It was traditionally the first book to be studied in *heder (‘elementary school’). (See also *HOLINESS CODE).
