LEVITE

The descendants of *Levi. The Levite tribe lacked land, but instead were appointed to serve in the *tabernacle.

They were supported by *tithes from the other Israelites. The Levites were subject to the *priests, the descendants of *Aaron (see *AARONIDES) and during the time of the monarchy, they became state officials. The *aggadic tradition teaches that when at the end of time *God purifies the *twelve tribes, the tribe of Levi will be purified first.
