Dictionary of Environmental Health

latent heat

The heat energy necessary to change the physical state of a solid to a liquid, or liquid to a vapour, without changing its temperature. The energy is absorbed on translation of the substance from solid to liquid or from liquid to vapour and released when the process is reversed.

At standard ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE the latent heat of vaporisation of water (i.e. the amount of heat needed completely to convert 1 gram of water at 100°C to steam at the same temperature) is 2,256 Kj/kg.
