LAMENTATIONS, BOOK OF

A Biblical book, numbered among the *five *scrolls.

The Book of Lamentations is a lament for the destruction of *Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. It was traditionally thought to have been written by *Jeremiah although this is not accepted by most modern scholars. It is closely related to other examples of *wisdom literature and was almost certainly written in the first half of the 6th Century BCE.
