A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

KOHEN

A hereditary *priest. After the destruction of the *Temple in *Jerusalem in 70 CE, *sacrifice no longer had a place in the Jewish religion.

A priest’s duties were restricted to reciting the Priestly *Benediction on *festivals and redeeming the *first-born (*Pidyon ha-Ben). Kohenim continue to exist, but identity depends on folk memory passed down from father to son. To this day kohenim may not marry divorced women or *proselytes; because of the historical questionableness of the continued institution, the *Progressive movements no longer recognise the category. (See *AARON, *AARONIDES, *HIGH PRIEST, *LEVITES, *PRIEST, *SACRIFICE, *SADDUCEES, *TEMPLE).
