Knowledge about Language (KAL)
A term that has developed in the context of national curriculum English.
The Kingman Report and Cox Report, as well as the Language in the National Curriculum project, recommended that pupils should study the structure of the English language, but not in the shape of exercises in formal grammar. Since 1997, knowledge about language has been incorporated into the National Literacy Strategy and the literacy hour.
