Kōbō Daishi (Kukai)

The Founder of the Shingon (q.v.) School of Japanese Buddhism. A religious genius and social reformer, an engineer and artist.

He was instrumental, with Dengyō Daishi (q.v.) in establishing the union of Shintō with Buddhism known as Ryōbu Shintō (q.v.). He died at the monastery founded by him 011 Mount Kōya (Kōyasan, q.v.), still the headquarters of Shingon. (See Japan, Shingon.)
