Konstantinos Karamanlis has been Prime Minister of Greece since 10 March 2004. His appointment followed the general election of 7 March 2004 in which his party, New Democracy (ND), won 45.36% of the vote and 164 seats in the 300-seat Vouli ton Ellinon. This brought an end to 20 years of government by the Panhellenic Socialist Movement.
Karamanlis was a leading member of the ND youth wing in 1974–79. He was elected as a member of parliament for the district of Thessaloniki in 1989 and served as secretary of the parliament’s board and secretary of political planning for the party in 1989. He took over as president of ND in March 1997. Born in September 1956 in Athens, Karamanlis studied law at the Athens School of Law and Tufts University, USA. He practised as a lawyer in 1984–89. Konstantinos Karamanlis is married to Natasa Pazaiti and is the father of twins.
