JUDAH MACCABEE

(2nd Century BCE). Military leader. The son of Mattathias the *Hasmonean, Judah led the revolt against the pagan Syrians. As a result of his campaign, he captured *Jerusalem and purified the *Temple (see *HANUKKAH). His exploits are recorded in the Book of Maccabees (See *MACCABEES, BOOK OF).
