JUDAH HA-NASI

(2nd Century CE) Legal expert. Judah ha-Nasi was a descendant of Rabbi *Hillel.

As *nasi of the community, he built up the sense of unity of the Jewish people and was a key figure in the redaction of the *Mishnah. Although it is not clear by what principles he made his selection from the *Oral Law, his collection was regarded as fixed and later *halakhah grew out of commentary on the Mishnah (see *TALMUD). Judah was much revered by his contemporaries and known as Rabbi. (See *MISHNAH).
