The final book of the *Hexateuch. The Book of Joshua describes the conquest and the settlement of the land of *Canaan after the *exodus from Egypt and before the period of the *Judges.
Joshua himself took over the leadership of the people after the death of *Moses and organised the takeover and appointment of the land between the *twelve tribes. Traditionally the book was believed to have been written by Joshua himself, but this is now not accepted by scholars. (See *DOCUMENTARY HYPOTHESIS).
