The son of the *patriarch *Jacob by his favourite wife Rachel. The lengthy story of Joseph is narrated in the Book of *Genesis Chs.

37–47. Joseph himself did not have one of the *twelve tribes named after him. Instead his descendants belonged to the two tribes named for his sons *Ephraim and Manasseh so in a real sense, although not the *firstborn, Joseph inherited a double portion.
