A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

JONAH, BOOK OF

A prophetic book of the *Bible.

The Book of Jonah is largely an account of the story of Jonah who fled to Tarshish rather than preach *God’s wrath to the wicked people of Nineveh. After a storm and being swallowed by a great fish, Jonah did go to Nineveh, but, because the people repented, God did not execute his vengeance. The book is referred to in the Book of *Tobit so it must have been composed before the 4th Century BCE.
