JOHANAN BEN ZAKKAI

(1st Century CE). *Sage. During the *Jewish War, Johanan ben Zakkai, the leading authority of his day, managed to leave the besieged city of *Jerusalem to join the existing *academy in *Jabneh.

Under his leadership, the *bet din at Jabneh attained the status of *Sanhedrin. Although he himself was never declared *nasi, his successor, Rabban Gamaliel was so styled. As a result of his efforts, the institutions of *Judaism managed to survive the catastrophic loss of the *Temple. Johanan’s own ordinances were issued ‘in remembrance of the Temple’ and he is remembered as the first sage to engage in *kabbalah (Jewish mysticism).
