JOB, THE BOOK OF

A *biblical book in the *Ketuvim (‘Writings’) section. The Book of Job tells the story of how the upright Job was tested by *God by the destruction of his family and worldly goods.

Job refuses to accept that these disasters are the result of his *sin and ultimately God speaks to him and everything is restored. The date, authorship and precise meaning of the book are the subject of much scholarly discussion. In general, the *sages compared Job with *Abraham as being the subject of a divine trial.
