A *Biblical book of *Prophecy. Jeremiah himself was of priestly descent. During his lifetime, King *Josiah reformed the cult, the Babylonians conquered Judah, the *Temple in *Jerusalem was destroyed and the people were taken to *exile in Babylon. The book includes the *Scribe *Baruch’s scroll (Chs.
1–6), Jeremiah’s sermon in the temple (Chs. 7–10) and various oracles, parables and accounts of incidents in the prophet’s life. Chs. 30 and 31 are known as the ‘Book of consolations’ and are placed among the incidents. Jeremiah is thought to have died in Egypt having been persuaded to flee after the murder of *Gedaliah. The Book of *Lamentations is also traditionally ascribed to Jeremiah.
