Jeremiah

Prophet in Jerusalem, ca. 620 to 580 B.C.E., before the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586. He warned that God would not protect Jerusalem if Israel violated the covenant that God made with them in the Torah (Jeremiah 7 and 26).

He advised Israel to submit to Babylonia and accept the punishment brought by God through the Babylonians. After the conquest of Jerusalem, he was forced to go into exile to Egypt, where he died. He is credited with the authorship of the book of Lamentations, which mourns for the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem.
